Jacky Donovan

Through this journey, I have met a lot of Indie Authors. I connected with Jacky Donovan virtually from one of my favorite FB network group called: We love memoirs. She’s a bestselling author and publisher. Her books include autobiographies of the world’s first celebrity cat and dog! All quirkily narrated by the animals themselves. And her own personal memoir, which is a humorous yet heartrending erotic adult-only read. She is a regular contributor to Huffington Post and Sabotage Times.

Meet Jacky Donovan in Egypt
1. Tell me about yourself.
My life started at the age of 40 when I transformed from miserable housewife and businesswoman to deliciously devilish dominatrix. Now retired, I grasp life with both hands and have been backpacking the world for nearly six years, predominantly across Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania. My enthusiasm for travel shows no signs of waning, but COVID-19 has hampered my ability to move around freely, although I’ve recently spent time in Switzerland, Turkey and Thailand. I’m currently living in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, but Googling madly to see where I can head to in the next few weeks. Watch this space!

2. Synopsis of your book in one sentence.
When Jacky swaps business suits for thigh length boots, her life changes dramatically, with hilarious consequences, but can she fulfil the bizarre and risqué fantasies her new career demands, or will it destroy her…?

3. Is this a series?
I diversified into writing my Heroic Animals memoir series and publishing Simon Ships Out and Smoky so never finished the sequel to Smart as a Whip. Maybe one day I’ll get round to writing the sequel which will focus on further highlights of my life as a dominatrix, the swingers scene and tantric massage.

4. Why did you write this book?
My tales of life as a dominatrix in my very own dungeon often made friends laugh out loud as my clients’ requests weren’t always the stereotypical image of BDSM (bondage, sadism, discipline, masochism) which usually revolves around someone wanting to be whipped or spanked for fun. The runaway success of 50 Shades of Grey incensed me as I didn’t feel it accurately portrayed the subject, but it prompted me to dust off my notes and publish Smart as a Whip.

5.What message or lessons did you want your readers to take from this book?
I absolutely adored my job as a dominatrix, and I wanted readers to see that BDSM wasn’t all about men in dirty rain macs seeking perverse pleasure. The psychology behind what made people request my services fascinated me, with many clients referring to me as their therapist. I hoped to let readers understand that fantasy play between consenting adults can be pleasurable, relaxing, fulfilling and, above all, enormous fun.

6. Are you writing at the moment?
I’m about to publish a short travel memoir entitled From Fear to Serenity: A Lombok Earthquake Survivor’s Tale which describes my escape from a fatal series of earthquakes in Indonesia three years ago.

7. If you are not writing, what are you doing?
My life revolves around travelling, but my brain loves to work en route. I enjoy helping authors to publish their books, so I provide an end-to-end service that includes editing, proofreading, formatting, cover design, uploading to the relevant publishing platforms and heaps of tips to ensure an author achieves success with their book. To date, I’ve helped with >50 books and love sharing an author’s delight when their book receives terrific feedback.

8. If you were a flower, fruit or a vegetable, what would you want to be and why?
Purple dragon fruit. A bit spiky on the outside if you don’t handle me kindly, but soft, sweet, bold, vibrant and deliciously good for you on the inside.

9. What is your advice to emerging Indie authors?
Have confidence in yourself and go for it but seek assistance in order that you publish a professional book. Even the most successful authors have editors, proofreaders, etc., so speculate to accumulate and invest in a well-respected editor, proofreader and cover designer so that you give your writing the best possible chance of success. I’ll be happy to help you!

9. What are you currently reading?
I’m reading a friend’s travel blog, www.marcustravels.net, as he’s just returned from a solo Nordic trek, and his thoughtfully descriptive writing made me want to reread his previous work. I’m trying to persuade him to publish two books he produced years ago and an anthology of travel tales as he writes beautifully. Thanks, Jackie.
