Darby Patterson

Meet Darby and sweet ol’ Murphy
1. Tell me about yourself.
I was a journalist and writer for most of my working career. And throughout my life, from teenager on, I found that I couldn’t NOT write. Along with my own fiction work, I really like helping people write their own memoirs. People have such interesting and diverse lives. When I’m not writing I enjoy sculpting in clay to be cast in bronze.

2. Synopsis of your book in one sentence.
Jesse, a big city journalist turns to publishing a newspaper in a rugged mountain town where he puts his skills to use to catch the killer of a young logging protestor whose body was found in Jackass Creek.

3. Why did you write this book?
The people and the place where the novel is set are part of my own history. I remember the people, the character and culture clearly and I wanted to celebrate all that in a cozy mystery … to honor them.

4.What message or lessons did you want your readers to take from this book?
Small towns, far from the excitement of the city, have so much to offer … there’s a unique culture and set of values that isn’t found elsewhere. And, the tradition of logging and those in the diminished industry is one to be cherished over time.

5. Are you writing a second book?
Yes, I am.

6. If you are not writing, what are you doing?
I am playing with clay and making sculptures. Playing with my 2 cherished dogs and keeping my ears open for yet another story I need to tell.

7. What would you advise to emerging Indie authors?
Write. Write. There is NO such thing as writers’ block. Reach out for help with promotions if that’s not your thing. … so you have no excuse to not write.

8. What’s the last book you read?
I am reading through Bob Bickfords series of noirs mystery, romance. What a lyrical and breathtaking writer!

9. If you were a flower, fruit or a vegetable, what would you want to be and why?
Durian fruit … because it’s complicated and most people, can’t get past the smell to eat it!
